PUSH NOTIFICATIONS: BEST PRACTICES

HERE ARE SOME QUICK TIPS FOR SENDING PUSH NOTIFICATIONS:

A great tip to start off is developing a clear strategy for Push Notes. What types of messages you will post, times of day you will post, and how often you will post. This will also help your audience stay tuned and not disengage. It will also ensure your messages are not sent too often, or off topic etc.

To send out a Push Note, you need:

  1. A clear message
  2. Somewhere to send the user to, when they click on your message – URL, section within the app, etc
  3. To segment the app users based on their location (if appropriate)
  4. Schedule it

Here are some general rules to consider when putting together a Push Note:

  1. Frequency:
  • Promotional apps should use a lower frequency send rate, compared to social apps
  • The right frequency depends on your business and the type of message you are sending – you need to come up with an appropriate schedule that it right for you and your audience
  1. Timing:
  • If you have something on offer, or on sale a Push Note is a great way to notify your app audience.
  • Click rate is higher in the afternoon compared to morning and evening
  • Let your users know about something before it expires – sending a message with a high sense of urgency
  • Consider the time of day you are sending it when your users will best respond – no 3am messages!
  • Consider the message paired with sound, or phone vibrations – i.e. when a user might react faster when their phone is sitting on a desk, more so than in their pocket.
  • Incorporating holidays, events and news: “Happy Valentine’s Day! Have a lovely evening. Here’s a discount code for dining out.”
  1. Content:
  • Push Notes are generally High Urgency, Simple Content
  • For best results, the message should have 10 or fewer words
  • Add value to your message – make sure it is something your users are interested in
  • Don’t limit yourself to Push Notes only – mix up your communication through other channels
  1. Location:
  • Segment based on location for location specific messages i.e. “Sale! Today only! Get in Store Quick.”

Push Note updates: The developers are working to add some additions to our push notifications. One addition currently being worked on is adding a function of custom push notes – to create custom groups that would allow the client to sort their users and therefore send push notes accordingly. No timeline has been discussed for this, but it is in the works.
